Bound by Charcoal and Clay

A magical realism novel by Katelin Cummins

Status: manuscript finished, querying literary agents

Twenty-two-year-old Viera is obsessed with becoming a successful artist like her father. After her father’s sudden death, her favorite of her father’s charcoal drawings animates on the page and begins to talk to Viera, introducing himself as Gareth, the muse spirit behind her father’s success. She falls in love with him while he magically inspires her, makes her dragon sculptures come to life, and helps her secure a place at a prestigious gallery. But Gareth is manipulative, controlling, and relentless, smothering her freedom and joy even while all her dreams come true. Remaining with Gareth would perpetuate the cycle of abuse for herself and future generations, but the only way to break free is to destroy and give up her beloved art.
