Frequently Asked Questions

What is a book coach?

A book coach is a mentor, project manager, encourager, and editor. Most editors work with the text only, while a book coach also works with the writer. A book coach is similar to a sports, business, or life coach with a focus on your writing life and book project instead of other areas.

Working with a book coach is like having a personal advisor for your book. You don’t have to walk alone and figure it out by yourself.

Why do I need a book coach?

You don’t need a book coach. You can write and publish your book without one, and many writers do. There are many other free and paid resources out there for writers. You can learn from books, workshops, and conferences, and you can get feedback from critique groups or other professional editors.

So why would you hire a book coach? It comes down to the experience you want while working on your book.

For example, if you join a critique group, you will be expected to spend time reading and critiquing other writers stories in exchange for feedback on your own work, and that feedback will vary in quality depending on the experience of the group members. Depending on the group you find and your own preferences, this experience could be wonderful and supportive, or it could be frustrating, misleading, and discouraging.

Hire a book coach if you want someone to spend time with you and your book one-on-one, to guide you step-by-step through the creative process, and give you trusted professional feedback that encourages you as a writer.

What genres do you work with?

I primarily work with speculative fiction, especially fantasy novels. I coach novels for adult, new adult, young adult, and middle grade audiences.

If you are writing something else and want to work with me, let’s talk! If I’m not the right coach for you, I can refer you to another book coach.

Can you guarantee that I will get an agent or sell my book?

No. There are no guarantees in the publishing world. I can coach you to do your best work and query agents well. but in the end, we can’t control the decisions of literary agents or of book buyers.

Will you write or revise my book for me?

No. I coach you to do the work yourself. I will give you feedback and guide you on how to edit your own text. Your writing will be your own and it will always be your choice whether to follow my advice or not.
